European Syrphid, first time collected in California. The large extension at the base of the hind femur is characteristic for the males of this species. Also the completely silver dusted sides and the lack of the spurious vein.

What, no spurious vein? What are we to do? Interesting coloration and rear legs.

Actually Lynn Kimsey found this species during her project inventaring
the dunes. But it was nice specimen, so people can see the characters.. I think it is way more common and I hope somebody will come up with more data about this fly....It is more a Mediterranean one, which is not found in Central Europe...
