Here is C. O'Briens answer
to my forwarding this discussion:
The Fullerton CA weevil is Listroderes costirostris Schoenherr, and the
SC photo identified by Mike Thomas is L. difficilis Germaine as he says.
Kuschel has told me in a letter that he will be changing the name of
difficilis in a paper to be published sometime. He did not say where it will
be placed. At this moment the two species are as named here. L. costirostris
is currently restricted to CA and rarely from western AZ. All other North
American vegetable weevil specimens are currently L. difficilis, and are
misidentified in most collections as L. costirostris.

Thanks so much, margarethe
for your knowledge and assistance, plus moving my post to the newly created page. How very turnkey! LOL.

Thanks, Boris and Michael.
Listroderes certainly looks right, but I'm not sure there's enough here to get it to species. (My best guess is that L. costirostris is it. More on that species here:)

"Vegetable weevil" is good to know, and I'll pass the info along to Arboretum staff. This particular individual was found in a children's garden, where there's a broad mix of plants.
Here's another Listroderes sp. in case anyone else is interested:
