katydid nymph? - Scudderia mexicana

katydid nymph? - Scudderia mexicana
Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, USA
January 9, 2009
Size: body 1/2 inch
I didn't notice until after I took this picture, but this poor little guy is missing a couple of legs, not to mention his right antenna seems to have been severed. I am assuming this is a katydid nymph and not a grasshopper based off of the antenna length, is this correct? Also, is it possible to tell what gender it is?

hmmm
I just found some similar images in the guide, could this possibly be a nymph of Scudderia sp.?

Edit: If this is indeed Scudderia, there are really only 2 candidates for species level identification in this region: S. mexicana or S. furcata. The description of S. mexicana in Insects of the Los Angeles Basin by Charles Hogue seems to be a perfect match for this individual, though without a comparable description of S. furcata nymphs I can't really go any farther.

Yes, katydid, due to long antennae.
Your gender question is interesting. I'll be looking for an answer, too.
