Hemileuca burnsi
This is Hemileuca burnsi, which feeds on indigo bush.

Thanks J & J -- that agrees with my own shaky guess as to genus... According to the CA Moth Specimen Database there are 8 Hemileuca in CA, 3 of them in Kern County.
