Unknown fly with vivid green abdomen - Ptecticus trivittatus Boston County, Massachusetts, USA Size: ~2cm
Found this brightly-colored fly in my apartment's kitchen last night - from its behavior and appearance i initially mistook it for a wasp. Roughly 2cm, short antennae, and the abdomen is vivid green but not iridescent.
Obviously it didn't wander in from a snowbank outside, alone, so I've been wondering how it arrived (presumably before it reached adulthood). I used a small quantity of store-bought compost when repotting some houseplants a month ago - is that a likely candidate?
(the side view is taken through a glass - apologies for the quality)
