Callirhytis quercussimilis - Zapatella quercusphellos

Callirhytis quercussimilis - Zapatella quercusphellos
Marlton, Burlington County, New Jersey, USA
April 30, 2008
Similar gall on same tree, found open. Just showing what is probably last years gall. Don't know if it ruptured open like this due to the gall-makers, or maybe a squirrel ate it.

Probably squirrel
Gall wasps typically just leave little round exit holes... I don't think there are any gall makers capable of making an opening this big in something woody... There are some aphid galls with a big "mouth" that opens up when they're "ripe," but that's about it.
