Identification
No M-Cu crossvein and first segment of front tarsus longer than tibia identify subfamily Chironominae. R-M crossvein nearly parallel to M and R4+5 identifies tribe Tanytarsini. Wings are hairy, at least near the tips. M vein usually ends near wing tip. Usually with reduced anal lobe of wing and dorsal extension of eyes.
Males often have a notch between abdominal segments 7 and 8. This is also found in Polypedilum of tribe Chironomini, but not in any other Chironomidae.
