Sap-feeding Beetle - Epuraea corticina - female

Sap-feeding Beetle - Epuraea corticina - Female
Mobile (Dog River), Mobile County, Alabama, USA
January 19, 2009
Size: 3mm
I discovered this tiny beetle on a throughly rotten banana I'd been cultivating. I am thinking this sap beetle is likely Epuraea flavomaculata, though it does seem a bit out of its range. Verification appreciated.

Moved VERY tentatively -- try to lure & shoot'em again
Moved from Epuraea.

Moved

sure, a female Epuraea...
...is all i can tell; several spp. come to banana peels here in my backyard [not in Jan., though :-]

Female Key
Thanks. What's the key for female? BTW she probably came south for the winter :-]

*
in thins genus, females lack the 'post-pygidium' (small add'l segment at the tip of pygidium)
this is not E. flavomaculata, though -- not even the same subgenus; on the other hand, erichsoni Reitter is a possibility

Progress
We may getting somewhere. Epunaea luteolus (Erichson) makes more sense as this a sp. is listed on University of Florida sap beetles.

I seriously doubt this little girl flew all the way from the northeast.

not the same subgenus as E. luteola
(in combination with Epuraea, this specific name must have the feminine form luteola; with Haptoncus, which is masculine, luteolus)

Veni, Vidi, Vici
Most interesting. I never thought about rules of gender in taxonomy. I learn everyday on Bug Guide.

BTW I'm reading up on these tiny sap suckers and will figure this one out, sooner or later. Thank you for your help. Robert
