Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA April 28, 2008 Size: About 29 mm to wing tip
We are identifying this antlion as Gnopholeon sp based on hefty front femora, tibial spurs and wing venation as illustranted in Stange's 1970 revision of the antlion tribe of Brachynemurini. In 1994 he placed this genue Gnopholeon in its own tribe Gnopholeonini. We suspect a female based on the short abdomen, and we suspect species delicatulus because the hairs (setae) on the forefemur do not appear to be knobbed, the trait defining this species.
