Honeybee stinger - Apis mellifera - female

Honeybee stinger - Apis mellifera - Female
Uptown New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, USA
January 23, 2009
Here is a honeybee stinger, along with the associated organs for producing and ejecting venom. The whole structure detaches as a unit, and the barbs of the stinger ensure that it remains in the victim's skin.

First time that I see a close-up of the stinger.
