unknown wood-boring larva?

unknown wood-boring larva?
La Jolla, San Diego County, California, USA
February 1, 2009
Size: about 1.5"
Found this strange larva boring through a log that I overturned while I was out for a walk today. I was able to scare it out of its hole long enough to snap a couple photos. Anyone know what it is? I found it in an area that has huge piles of cut logs; there is a lot of eucalyptus in the area, but I can't be sure what type of tree the log came from because it seems like a general dumping ground for cleared trees from nearby.
