This beetle was found near porch lights in spruce/fir habitat at 7600 feet elevation.

for the id. I've been reading about this species and find they prey on the Mountain Pine Beetle that are devastating our forests here in NW Colorado.

Tragosoma is a
Longhorned Beetle, a Cerambycid. I do not know of any beetle of that family that preys on other beetles - rather the Cermambycid larvae are wood-borers themselves. The adults often lay their eggs in trees that are already weakened or even dead from other causes, and Pine beetles victims can be among those.

I apologize and thank you,
Margarethe,for correcting me. I don't know where I read that. I cannot find it in any of my books, maybe I saw it online somewhere. Or, since I became ill with the flu a few days ago, maybe I was just feverish and confused.
