Four-lined Plant Bug - Poecilocapsus lineatus

Four-lined Plant Bug - Poecilocapsus lineatus
Baiting Hollow, Suffolk County, New York, USA
June 20, 2008
Size: small
Found on Mullein.

I hope i can see this famous and widespread bug this year.
Anyway, I wonder the difference between P. lineatus and P. nigriger. According to Blatchley(1), P. nigriger "Differs from typical lineatus only in being somewhat shorter and more oval, usually more greenish-yellow with dark stripes of elytra wider and a deeper black, and the spot on middle of cuneus larger and more prominent," and it seems to be considered as only a variety of lineatus. But, neartica and PBI treat it as an independent species.

Interesting
that you have mentioned differences between P. lineatus and P. nigriger since today when I was looking at the images in BugGuide I was wondering if there are different species mixed into P. lineatus or if there are just naturally occurring differences. I am not familiar with P. nigriger until now and have not seen one. I'm wondering now what one this is.

I see quite a few of these in the spring. They all appear the same. The ones I have here are very quick and hide when you get near or cast a shadow. I have many pictures of them hiding in stem bifurcations.
