Checkered Beetle in California (May) - Cymatodera vandykei

Checkered Beetle in California (May) - Cymatodera vandykei
Webb Canyon, ~2000 ft. altitude, Los Angeles County, California, USA
May 6, 2008
Size: ~8-10mm
Being very new to my study of beetles, sometimes I still just have to look through the pics in the Guide until I find one that looks close (But, at least I learn a lot in the process!) Hopefully, I'm not way off base on this one, but I think this is probably a Clerid, maybe in the Genus Cymatodera. It seems to most closely resemble Cymatodera inor*nata, but that species is not found in my area. The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History's California Beetle Project lists many species within Cymatodera which are not currently represented on BugGuide, but I wouldn't even begin to know how to narrow down my choices. I live in mixed oak/chaparral habitat. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Cymatodera indeed -- good call
most Cymatodera cannot be IDed without specimen exam even by experts. but let's wait...

V... you made my morning!
Very cool to get a species ID, and thanks for already taking care of the new Guide page on my behalf. Also, a belated "thank you" to Jacques Rifkind for his help in IDing my last Clerid, as well as this one. It is very exciting for me to be able to put names to the insects that share my property with me and I am really so very appreciative for the help I receive via this website.

you're very welcome
pls keep shooting and posting nice stuff, ok?

Getting the right genus...
...is success enough for one day! Thanks for the expert confirmation... Suspect you're correct that it won't go much further. Just read this snippet in a sample page online from a Field Guide to Beetles of CA:

Nineteen species of Cymatodera are found in California, and examination of the male genitalia is often necessary to identify the species.

Unfortunately, Google's Book Search wouldn't let me read the next page, but I'm going to go ahead and order that book tonight... some very exciting reading is on the near horizon!
