micro w/ white stockings... - Caloptilia rhoifoliella
south Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
February 3, 2009
At lights in small mesic patch under an oak-willow canopy...

Moved
Moved from Caloptilia.

Loooks like one of the
Caloptilia. There are many that I can't tell apart. As best as I can tell (not much experience in this area) Caloptilia sassafrasella and Caloptilia rhoifoliella may be possible, but there may be others.

Caloptilia rhoifoliella
I think I'm comfortable with calling this:

0630 – Caloptilia rhoifoliella - MPG

Knudson & Bordelon (2001) (1) list C. rhoifoliella for Concan, Uvalde Co., TX which is about 4-5 counties (or ~150 driving miles) to the west ...
.

Caloptilia options from local UT field station
John, Thanks!! Here's what's been caught in the county.

Moths of Brackenridge Field Laboratory, UT, Austin:

# 583 x Caloptilia spp.
# 591 Caloptilia atomosella
# 594 Caloptilia belfrageella
# 622 Caloptilia paradoxa
# 639 Caloptilia stigmatella [not this sp.]

Of these, only the last sp. is pictured at MPG:

Pre-Tortricid Micros -- 0435-0917 - MPG

0639 – Caloptilia stigmatella - MPG
.

Such a bizarre looking shot
Somehow reminds me of a Sci-Fi alien. Is this a common pose for this genus? Was it 'walking' when you shot it?

Standard Posture
.... for all the Caloptilia. Just think, to THEM it's we who are weird :-)
