White-spotted Sable Moth - Hodges#4958a - Anania funebris

White-spotted Sable Moth - Hodges#4958a - Anania funebris
Baiting Hollow, Suffolk County, New York, USA
June 14, 2008

Thank you, Chris and June
For the ID and extra information.
I was aware of the Eight-spotted Forester, but not the White-spotted Sable.
Up until now I haven't been differentiating them.
Thanks again.

I agree it's Anania funebris,
also called White-spotted Sable moth. It is often confused with the Eight-spotted Forester moth, which has similar-looking spots on the wings. One difference is that the Eight-spotted Forester always has eight spots, whereas the White-spotted Sable can have more. Also the legs of the Eight-spotted Forester are dark and have furry orange "leg warmers" on part of the leg. The White-spotted Sable has light colored legs. Compare images from these guide pages:

not sure this is a butterfly
Reminds me of Hodges#4958a, Anania funebris, a moth... See images here
