Black/White Banded Beetle - what is it's real name? - Rosalia funebris

Size: 1 1/4 inches
We found this beetle walking near the shore of Quadra Island. It just kept walking around. It flew a small distance at one point, but otherwise was crawling over the rocks.

We'd really like to know what it's called!

Hey there, i found this particular beetle outside my apartment building in campbell river, i had him sitting in a bucket so i could get my sister to research him, but she decided against that.

I was wondering if there is a beetle musem or something that may need one of these little guys, he is in perfect shape :)

Wow - thank you for naming our mystery beetle. We had about 4 cameras all vying for a good shot - but didn't get anything like yours!!

Do these beetles only reside in our area? We have never seen the likes of it anywhere else.

 
Yes, Rosalia is native.
This is commonly known as the "banded alder borer," or "California laurel borer." They are native to much of the western U.S. Sometimes they literally flock to freshly painted buildings.
