Thyanta calceata
.
I’m open to other opinions/discussion, especially since Dr. Thomas’ ID was T. calceata but unless he is using characters that aren’t published, Thyanta calceata and Thyanta custator custator should be virtually impossible to reliably separate from photos. Given the distributional maps that were provided for the two species by Rider & Chapin (1992), T. calceata should only rarely occur in the northern parts of Florida, while T. custator custator occurs throughout the state. They also note that T. custator custator tends to be more narrow and longer, while T. calceata is more broad and short. I think that description fits T. custator custator better in this specimen, when compared to photos of T. calceata from the midwest, where T. custator custator is not expected to occur. Additionally, Rider & Chapin noted that the black anterolateral pronotal markings that both species possess are more extensive in T. calceata. It’s a tough feature to compare but these seem to be more lightly-defined than many of the midwestern T. calceata photos, at least to me.

Cool!
This is probably either a species of Thyanta or Banasa. Interesting composition:-)

Thanks.
I usually ignore stinkers, but this one was pretty cool.
