black shine weevil - Tyloderma aereum
Medford, (~25 miles east of Philadelphia, PA) Burlington County, New Jersey, USA

Size: 3.8mm
I see this weevil fairly regularly at the light, and it sticks out from most other weevils by lacking the normal dull scales and having a bit of a shine, with just a hint of oil sheen. Suggestions welcome :)

would you say the "rostrum with broad, median sulcus, and often frontal sulcus"? The more common species looks to be T. aereum (Say), but if I'm understand the key correctly, this one might rather be T. capitaloides Wibmer. Both are listed from NJ :)

i wouldn't call it a sulcus...
...which is supposed to look like a stria or a furrow, rather, while your guy shows a salient keel of sorts, although the specimen looks a great deal like the one IDed as T. aereum in the guide (except for finely vs coarsely punctured pronotum, a major diagnostic feature). Keep in mind, though, D&A's notorious terminological inconsistency.

thanks again.
it could be my poor lighting again that is "changing" the size of the punctures. And given T. capitaloides is also listed from NJ, now I know to look at these guys a little closer. Who knows, I might be getting them both but just haven't noticed the different noses. I'll move this one to T. aereum.

There are Baridinae
that are shiny and punctuated like yours.
