excavated burrow of Mycotrupes cartwrighti - Mycotrupes cartwrighti Phipps Park, Leon County, Florida, USA
The arrow towards the top shows a grass stem inserted in the burrow mouth to help follow the burrow. The bottom arrow points at the beetle. Most of the ones that I've excavated have been about 20 centimeters deep, with deeper burrows in drier soils. They have varied from what I think was a temporary burrow only a couple of centimeters deep to around 30 centimeters or so.
