Beetle eater - Arilus cristatus

Beetle eater - Arilus cristatus
Pleasant Gap, Centre County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 15, 2005
This insect was found on raspberry bushes, sucking on a japanese beetle.

Probably a wheel bug
This looks a lot like a young wheel bug (Arilus cristatus), a kind of assassin bug (Reduviidae). The first one I photographed (an adult) was only a few centimeters away from a dead japanese beetle.

Hemipteran nymph
This is an immature true bug, sucking out the juices of the beetle (and doing the world a service at the time!) but someone with expertise in the group should be able to ID further.
