This photo shows the coloration of the anterior side of the antennae, which is apparently a defining characteristic of this species.

Diagnostic character
It is perhaps better to say that the dark antenna tip is a defining character for Polistes fuscatus males. All other species (including dorsalis, metricus, bellicosus) have pale antennae. Note that this character works for males only.
