Tiger Moth? - Arctia virginalis

Tiger Moth? - Arctia virginalis
Galice, Josephine County, Oregon, USA
June 25, 2005
We drove up a side road from the Rogue River just outside Galice and saw these striking moths flying along the roadside. The only one we managed to photograph was sorely bedraggled. We're thinking 8163 Platyprepia virginalis but we didn't see any spots on the hind wing though it looks like there might be some on the underside view. CBIF has an image that looks very much like ours, with all black hindwings, but listed as 8163b .

Platyprepia virginalis
I have been looking all over to find the name of the tiger moth!
The first time I saw it was 6/29/05, then in 6/16-17/06, and now 6/12/09. It is a day flying moth; a somewhat clumsy flier. Every time I have seen it, it has been flying over cloverish lawn grass. I captured one in 2005. It laid about 67 pearly, white eggs in my jar. I'll try to post some of my pictures soon.

Great! We look forward
to seeing your images!

Tiger moth
This looks like Platyprepia virginalis. I don't know the common name.

Ranchman's tiger moth.
Well, back in the day, it was called Ranchman's tiger moth:-) Really gorgeous day-flier.

Agree
That's one of the most beautiful moths I've ever seen in this family!
