I am trying to start a colony of these guys and would like to know what species they are. The adults are nothing special just uniform black.

Ugh!
That is why I am interested in pollinators rather than recyclers. Flowers are prettier : )
But it is good to know that this takes place in nature.

Is that purple looking thing a dead baby mouse?

 
Yes
It is and despie the small number I have around 30 they eat that in three days... well before it has the chance to smell
