according to new research by Torsten Dikow (in press), Laphriinae are the sister group to the rest of the robber flies, so they would be the 'primitive' robber flies if you choose to look at it that way. Leptogastrinae are nested deep among the robber flies, related to the group that includes Holcocephala e.g.
