unkn insect eggs? - Microcentrum

unkn insect eggs? - Microcentrum
Arivaca Cienega, Buenos Aires NWR, Pima County, Arizona, USA
February 15, 2009
Found what looks like insect eggs (???) growing on a branch of a small Mahonia sp. Eggs were very hard. Even pinched between fingernails didn't damage them. Each egg was about 2-3mm. Ideas anyone?

Thanks guys -
never would have guessed what they came from.

yes definitely Katydid eggs
Not sure what species though, but Microcentrum or Scudderia might be likely candidates.

Microcentrum...
Rumor has it that Microcentrum is the only species that deposits its eggs exposed and overlapping in rows like this. I have found conflicting accounts for other genera, possibly due to field guide authors assuming that all katydids do the same thing. Scudderia, at least, inserts its eggs in the edges of leaves.

Thanks
Charley - maybe someone will catch the little bugger in the act some day and we'll know for sure.

They look a lot like katydid eggs I had on my patio....
...but I'm not an expert. BTW, most of yours in this photo look very plump!
