Predaceous Diving Beetle - Graphoderus perplexus - male

Predaceous Diving Beetle - Graphoderus perplexus - Male
Edworthy Park, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
August 30, 2008
Size: ~15 mm
Pinned specimen from my collection showing the head and pronotal pattern; the anterior and posterior black transverse bars on the pronotum are separated from the margins in this species. Apparently the width of separation varies between individuals- from wide and clearly delimited to a thin, sometimes indistinct line, like in this one. Specimen dipnetted from a woodland pond with plenty of emergent vegetation.
