Spotted beetle - Cysteodemus armatus

Spotted beetle - Cysteodemus armatus
Anza-Borrega State Park, Hawk Canyon, San Diego County, California, USA
February 28, 2009
Size: 2-3cm
Ran but not all that fast.

Cysteodemus
Believe it's Cysteodemus armatus.

I second Jason's choice -
This is indeed Cysteodemus armatus, a flightless Meloid eating a variety of plants in the desert.
