Not the best angle for ID purposes, but it's pretty distinctive ,so I suspect someone will recognize it.

Checkerspot
Looks very similar to a Variable Checkerspot.

yes it is Euphydryas chalcedona
As for "subspecies" I believe those in Anza Borego are all refered to the name hennei.

...but willing to hazard a guess! Maybe one of the Checkerspots? Here's one that might look close:
