Mating Weevils - Ophryastes varius

Mating Weevils - Ophryastes varius
Tamarisk Campground, San Diego County, California, USA
March 1, 2009
Size: ~1cm female
Outside the restrooms/showers at the Tamarisk Campground. This is a small oasis at 1411' feet in the Santa Rosa mountains. The surrounding area is mostly cactus, creosote bush, ocotillo, and the like, but the campground itself has a number of probably non-native trees. Perhaps Ophryastes geminatus?

Nice work, Elliotte!
This is the first submission for this species from California.

Ophryastes varius LeConte
