Hemipenthes sp. - Hemipenthes
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
May 21, 2005
Size: BL ~ 10 mm
This bee fly was drowning in Duckweed when we fished it out of Paroli Pool in Culp Valley and put it on a stem to dry out. My best guess on this half-darkened wing insect is an Anthrax. The venation seems a little different from Nos. 156193-4. The vein separating the third posterior cell and the discall cell curves up rather than making more of a right angle bend in the previous submissions.

Thanks so much, Andy, for the ID. These dark-winged guys are really difficult to identify.
