possible misidentification
This photograph may be mis-idendified. The specimens shown appear to be Pteronarcys californica. They co-occur in many waters and young Pteronarcys are easily confused with Pteronarcella. The squared protrusions on the anterior side of the first thoratic segment are a Pteronarcys character. The anterior edges of that segment are rounded in Pteronarcella.
