Found under bark of recently felled cottonwood. Higher resolution (1024 pixels wide) scan available on request.
"Thirteen species and two subspecies are known from California." Field Guide to Beetles of California, Evans and Hogue, p.61. This specimen is not one of the two highlighted in this field guide.
I didn't note any specific smell when collecting it.

Chlaenius sp.; doubt C. nemoralis
which should have pronotum narrower and with duller metallic luster than what is shown in image. Furthermore, published western limit for C. nemoralis is SD-OK-TX.
