Identification
Adult: forewing very dark brown or gray (almost black) with fine black lines and whitish or pale brown area near anal angle that resembles a bird in flight; pale area extends along inner margin to base; hindwing grayish-brown, lighter than forewing
Range
eastern North America: Nova Scotia to Florida, west to Texas, north to Saskatchewan
Season
adults fly from May to August
Food
larvae feed on dock (Rumex spp.) and smartweed (Polygonum spp.)
