Gary, thanks for the species identification! I found just this one ant under bark at the Fresh Pond Reservation in Cambridge.

This is an excellent photo of Temnothorax schaumii. If you can provide detailed locality information for the Cambridge collection site, I can verity this identification. I am working on a guide to the ants of New England and this is one species that has avoided our collection efforts to date.
The propodeal spines are very short. T. schaumii is common in Mississippi. It is a widespread ant in the southern states but it is not as common in New England.
