or something close. Ones from Florida that I have seen have a lighter color pattern, but just saw a darker member of this species which is close to the photo here.

Ariotus quercicola (Schwarz, 1878)?
Don, I think that A. subtropicus is devoid of black apical spot on the suture, at least this is what Casey writes in his original description. In his key to Ariotus species, however, A. quercicola is characterized by the presence of such a spot. But I haven't seen the types of either species, or confirmed specimens.
