Calliphoridae possibly Paralucilia wheeleri? - Cochliomyia macellaria - male

Calliphoridae possibly Paralucilia wheeleri? - Cochliomyia macellaria - Male
Borrego Springs, San Diego County, California, USA
October 26, 1995
Size: BL about 11 mm
This blowfly has very strong stripes on the thorax. In James' Blowflies of California (1955), one possiblity with such stripes is Paralucilia wheeleri, which occurs throughout most of California. Any chance that this is the correct species?

Actually...
I'm wondering if this could be Compsomyiops callipes (=Paralucilia wheeleri). The stripes on the thorax stop well short of the anterior margin of the scutum, while they reach the margin on basically all the other flies identified as this taxon. Might be worth checking into this. Tough to be sure without any of the features from the key being visible.

This is Cochliomyia macellari
This is Cochliomyia macellaria--Compsomyiops have a narrower male frons.

based on a superficial comparison of specimens,
Compsomyiops callipes seems to have a dark purple abdomen and darker scutum, versus the typically more tomentose scutum and more greenish abdomen in C. macellaria.

Someone else could probably confirm.

But what about ?

It looks like Cochliomya mace

Thanks so much, v belov, for tracking down the identity of this blowfly. Now I know the species there is much info on the web about this fly and I am learning a lot about it and its habits.

Please thank Terry Whitworth also.

We did have a Calliphorid exp
We did have a Calliphorid expert on bugguide at one point... I'll stick it in family level and see if they come across it. I'm impressed that you got it as far as you did!
