Bee Fly in California (September) - Villa

Bee Fly in California (September) - Villa
Webb Canyon, ~2000 ft. altitude, Los Angeles County, California, USA
September 4, 2008
This extremely wet bee fly is yet another rescue from my landlord's pool. (Happily, it dried off and flew away in good health.) I have many photos of bee flies, but this is actually my first attempt to get an ID to species. I looked through ALL of the representative species in the Guide from California and I am thinking that this must be Villa later*alis or something very close anyway. However, the markings are a bit hard to discern because the bee is so wet and/or the colors may have been altered by the pool, so I could definitely use an expert opinion on this one... (Ron, are you out there?)
