BG2108 E2833 - Acanthepeira - female

BG2108 E2833 - Acanthepeira - Female
Barney Farm, Hwy 103, 1.0 mi NW Washington, St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, USA
October 24, 2008
Size: body length 12.1 mm.
We believe this is a female Acanthepeira cherokee.
From the key and figures of Levi 1976:
The short scape of the epigynum rule out A. venusta and A. marion.
The short tubercles on the abdomen rule out A. stellata and A. venusta
The female A. venusta has an elongated abdomen in comparision with the rounded abdomen of our specimen and the known distribution is much further east.
Also from the key for A. cherokee “Epigynum with a constriction proximal to swollen basal protion of scape. (Fig. 29)”
And for A. stellata “Epigynum without constriction above slender scape. (Fig. 14)”
As may be seen in photo 7 of 7, our specimen has a slight constriction in the outline of the basal portion of the scape. Fig. 29 shows this, but also shows a grove or notch that is not clearly seen in our specimen. We were uncertain about the interpretation of this feature.
Discussion, confirmation/correction welcome.
