from what I can understand of the keys of Am Beetles and D&A, this appears to be Cryptophagus, although both mention a "midlateral tooth" on the pronotum, which I can't see on mine (nor on several of the others from BugGuide already in the genus).

i also feel uncomfy with this placement -- the beetle vaguely reminds me of smtg i must've seen and known years ago, yet i fail to come up with a name
