Diceroprocta vitripennis (MALE)
Diceroprocta vitripennis

The Genus Diceroprocta quite possibly needs an overhaul!

The cicada pictured here belongs to the Diceroprocta vitripennis group - as defined, described and pertains to this cicada typology in the Southeastern USA.

D. vitripennis is a highly variable species, esp. with regards to the degree of red, brown, black, yellow & green on the mesonotum

Note the lack of the the cloudy "Z" infuscation = "Z" looking pattern found towards the tips of the forewings and typical of Tibicen species. This cloudy "Z" is well developed and seen towards the ends of the wings in most American Tibicen species (exceptions being T. pronotalis-dealbatus-cultriformis group).

This trait ("Smoky-Z") is less frequently seen in Diceroprocta species - noteable exceptions here in the Southeast are D. olympusa & D. biconica (both found in Florida).

The absence of the "Z" is diagnostic of most Diceroprocta and certainly this species, D. vitripennis.

I'm uploading a bunch of images and they will be moved to the proper places after editing them--keeping them linked saves time on the editing.
Please do not do any editing while I am working on them! I have all the information and will be adding it.
