Coleoptera - Thoracophorus costalis

Coleoptera - Thoracophorus costalis
Norfolk, Virginia, USA
March 20, 2009
Size: ~2.5mm
Looks like a small rove beetle. Found under piece of scrap lumber in the leaf litter. This one looks like it just crawled out of the mud. Walked very slow which is not typical for some of the rove beetles I have seen.

Thanks V...
I'll move it along.

fine --
i hope Adam will confirm the species.
they are adorable slow crawlers in ribbed medieval armor

Hi Scott and V
First, nice shot Scott -- keep 'em coming. There are many small roves hiding in the litter/under bark and Virginia is an excellent place for diversity.

Secondly, this is definitely Thoracophorus but unfortunately the species have not been revised. After checking American Beetles and Herman's catalog, I think its safe to say this is costalis (especially for the purposes of bugguide). There are two other NA species but the localities are some distance from VA.

Cheers,
Adam

Thanks Adam!
I saw a number of other rove beetles that day and the next, but unfortunately, they scurried for cover and I lost them. I'll keep trying :^)

T. costalis
Just collected a few of these guys under the bark of a rotting log. Not sure which tree, but a hardwood. GA: DeKalb Co. Chamblee (Atlanta 'suburb')
