Collembola - Ptenothrix atra
Norfolk, Virginia, USA
March 21, 2009
Size: ~0.50mm (probably less)
Looks like an immature. Found near false honey ant ground nest. Used Canon 40D with MP-E65mm macro lens at 5x with 68mm of extension tubes for the images.

Striking color....
...absolutely ADORABLE bug...and amazing shot, as always. Thanks for searching for these tiny creatures and posting such exquisite photos.

Moved

Ptenothrix atra
A juvenile instar. One of the first instars after hatching from the egg.

These images...
were taken in an area where I found the most Ptenothrix atra. Some mites were nearby and they were bigger!

Do these
things molt through stages? Are there juvenile forms in other words? And 68 damn mm of extension. Jeesh.

From what...
I've read, some species molt as much as 100 times in their lifespan. There are immature or juvenile forms, but I have mostly seen adults. This one could be an adult for all I know and 68mm Kenko tubes brought this tiny individual in really good. Of course, These were shot at f/4.5, so I didn't have much DOF to work with.

Had to take a lot of images to get these few good ones.

I have
To take a lot of images to get good shots of 30mm robbers, so still, nice work.

Thanks Herschel
