Size

3.8-4.8 mm

Identification

ferruginous, shining, legs testaceous; hemelytra slightly shorter and narrower than the abdomen; membranous portion transparent, apex broadly fuscous

Range

cosmopolitan, native probably to w. Palaearctic(1); in our area, e. NA (so. Canada to UT-TX-FL)(2)

Habitat

semi-domestic; common in granaries, houses, haystacks, bird/mammal nests(3); often associated with domestic animals, stored-grain, and other products(4)

Remarks

earliest record in our area: 1852 [as Xylocoris americanus](4)

known to probe human skin(5), rather painfully
