colorful Resaca planthopper - Alaruasa lepida

colorful Resaca planthopper - Alaruasa lepida
World Birding Center at Resaca de la Palma State Park, Cameron County, Texas, USA
December 6, 2008
I first observed this spectacular little homopteran in the woods at Resaca in October 2008. Several of them were present. Mike Rickard, who normally specializes in butterflies, took this photo in December, I think during Resaca's grand opening. Would love to know what it is...

Moved from Alaruasa.

Alaruasa lepida (Spinola 1839)

Alaruasa lepida
Only in Texas! And not all that little. One of our larger Fulgoridae.

Something else

I just instinctively lumped them together, thinking that because both were brilliantly multicolored, and in the same state park just a couple of months apart, that they were probably the same species. Now that I'm comparing Mike's photo to mine, I am realizing that what I photographed is something else completely, not even particularly Fulgorid-looking...
