Myrmosa unicolor (Myrmosidae)
The head is narrowed behind the eyes, which makes this M. unicolor.

Thanks much. I never heard of that family before. I see it had been considered a subfamily or Tiphidae or within Mutillidae. Would these be called ants, or wasps, or no common appellation?

These are wasps. This group was recently split from the velvet ants (Mutillidae) and are now their own family, the Myrmosidae. Velvet ants are wasps as well, but their common name is only such since they superficially resemble ants (only the family Formicidae are really ants).
