Blue blowfly - Calliphora vicina - male

Blue blowfly - Calliphora vicina - Male
Medford, Jackson County, Oregon, USA
May 28, 2008
Size: 11mm
I was fortunate to get a nice close-up of this male bluebottle fly before it bolted away. This is C. vicina which can be separated from other blowfly species (esp. C. vomitoria) by the appearance of yellowish-orange cheeks with fine black hairs as can be seen in this image. This particular species is often used by investigators and forensic entomologists to help determine the time of death of victims of violence.
