Habitat and lifestyle
Was it moving around in that case? What sort of water and/or bottom did you extract it from? Transportable cases are rare in the subfamily.

 
Androscoggin River
It's a large river, and this section has a mud/sand bottom with a few scattered rocks.
I could see it's head sticking out of the case just a little, so I gently squeezed the tube to get the larva out.
