Blue Metallic Bee - Osmia chalybea - female

Blue Metallic Bee - Osmia chalybea - Female
Lake Placid - Archbold Biological Station, Highlands County, Florida, USA
March 27, 2009
Size: roughly honey bee size
This bee was pollinating on a thistle. I am guessing it is a megachilid from the pollen collectors on the abdomen. The only metallic blue bees I found under Megachilinae in the guide were under Osmiini, but I am probably wrong on both counts. There appeared to only be this single bee at this location, which would fly off and return again a minute or two later.

female

I'll be at Archbold Station on Monday.

Thank you for another ID Dr.
Thank you for another ID Dr. Ascher! Would you have time on Monday for an insect novice to stop in and give you a quick hello?

Sex info
Remember, it is always a good idea to add the sex info if you have it. I did it for you this time.

Sure, I'll be there Monday afternoon
and all day Tues. You are very welcome to join our informal bee gathering at the station.

We'll be looking for an undescribed species of Osmia.
