Resembles Elateridae, maybe Melanotus but I'm not sure, the colors do not match up. Wait for an expert

Not an expert...
...so please wait for confirmation, but looks like a Click Beetle, Ampedus cordifer:

Nice looking beetle, Dr. Bryant!

i'm sure you nailed it

Haha well nevermind my suggestion, looks like Harsi got it

Quite convincing, Harsi.
I was thinking "Buprestid", partially from the posture, i.e. tucked under head. Now I waver...

Great minds think alike...
My first thought was that it was a buprestid too! But, when I couldn't find any good matches, I switched to looking at click beetles. Most of the credit for this ID (assuming it's correct) should go to Mike Boone. His extremely useful search tool allowed me to just view the California submissions, then I simply looked through them all 'til I found a match.

Hello Harsi
I risk exposing my computer ignorance, but I Would sure like to know how you viewed only submissions from CA - guess I'm computer challenged. Can't find a way to do it. Thanks

You are not computer challenged...
...you are probably just unaware of the link to the search module I'm referring to (it's not currently on the main BugGuide site). Here's a forum discussion post all about it:

If you still have questions after reading it, let me know...

Well
here I am again. Thanks for your reply Harsi. I did a search for "Advanced Search" and came up with boxes to fill in. Unfortunately, I don't know what a "user ID" number is???? Do I have a "user ID number" or is it a number I need to guess between 1 and 10 - only kidding. What is a taxon number?(= same as "photo number?"). I wanted to try it out by looking for all submissions of Phyciodes from AZ, but alas, I can't seem to get to 1st base. Thanks in advance for your help Harsi.

More explanation....
OK, to find the "User ID #" and the "Taxon #" you will need to be looking in the URL bar (aka "Address bar"). This is the field at the top of your browser where you type in the URL for a site (for example, http://bugguide.net). If you want to search for all the photos by a given user, you would click on the persons name which would bring up their profile page (for example, yours). Now, look in the URL bar and you will see that there is a string of numbers at the end of the address -- for instance, yours is "5574". That would be the "User ID #". If, as you mention, you want to search for specific images of Phyciodes, then you would go to the Info page for what you wish to search on -- in this case that would be here -- and the number you see again in the URL bar ("221") would be the number that you enter for "Taxon ID #". Fortunately, however, Mike has recently made this feature even easier for people to use and you can also enter the letters of the name you wish to search on and you will see that a drop-down menu of choices appears. Then, you simply click on the one you want to search for and it saves you the time of looking up the taxon number.

I hope this helps. If you still have questions, please feel free to e-mail me privately.

Finally
got it - thanks again Harsi. Would never have thought to look at the address bar!
